About 20 years ago, I traveled in Italy. When I returned, I got a notice from the Rome Police that I had a ticket for stopping in a taxi zone (I had stopped to ask directions, not realizing that was prohibited). The notice said I could ask for the fine to be excused. So I wrote, explaining the situation. I did not hear back but then realized it was unrealistic of me to expect the Rome Police to pay attention to something in English. So I sent the $100 fine, but this was after the date that it was due. (I no longer have my records, unfortunately.)
Is there any chance when I fly into Italy this year my name will pop up on a computer as owing money, and I’ll sit in custody until we can pay the Rome Police?
I’ve seen various threads about tickets but none where someone from Italy who might know about this opines on this particular question (or an American, but presumably an American could only confirm that it CAN cause problems!).
Nobody at the border will know you were ever fined, even if it had happened last month. The statute of limitations on traffic tickets is five years anyhow.
There are many threads discussing this
You won’t be arrested, you are safe-you are way oast statute of limitations
