Campsites south of Venice

I am having trouble locating details of campsites in Rovigo or Rosolina, further east on the coast. All help much appreciated, thank you.

Google maps for the area you want. Then click on the "Nearby" icon, then put "camping" in the search box. I see a ton along the Adriatic north and south of the mouth of the Adige River, around Chioggia.

I've been there now, and the sites I have looked at seem to be thinking very big and and have horrendous prices. All I want is to arrive without a vehicle, pitch a tent and pay perhaps 10-15 euros for the privilege. At this point, I have not even seen any mention of tents!

You are going to find that camping across Europe is dissimilar from American camping, especially with regard to drop ins and ambiance. In Europe, camping is more of a middle class way of taking a vacation, and trailers and "camping cars" are the norm. There are tent spaces, but since there are a number of amenities, someone has to pay for them. Usually, folks stay several days or a week, enjoying the "experience" of camping, rather than just using the campsite as a place to sleep.

Having spent a month several years ago camping across France, Germany, and Italy, I can definitely say that it is a more elevated experience than, say, popping up a tent in a USFS campground. It seems that the prices you encountered reflect this.

I think some countries are developing a cheaper alternative. I can only speak for Denmark where you can find "primitive campsites" in publicly owned forests. You may be able to find similar in other countries.

Thank you both for your perceptive remarks.

wbfey1, what you say is very interesting. Actually, I'm a European myself (a Briton living in France, and I have now updated my profile), but I have had little experience of camping either side of the Atlantic.

Ideas that now come to me are: camping wild in a forest where it is not forbidden (but how to know?); offering people in small towns or villages 10 euros a night to camp in their garden. Any more?
