Anyone been to Campobasso? Is it worth a day to visit? What does the city offer?
The historical center of the city offers much. There is Castello Monforte, located at the highest point of the city. Chiesa di Santa Maria del Monte is located next to the castle and offers a number of paintings by Amodeo Trivisonno, including all of the murals in the chapel dedicated to Padre Pio. There are several other medieval churches open to the public: San Leonardo, Santa Maria della Croce, capella di Madonna della Libera, and la Cattedrale. All offer late medieval works of art. All have also been rebuilt over the years. One very interesting church is la chiesa di Sant'Antonio Abate. It is considered a jewel of the baroque period. It was built circa 1572 and remains in its original state. It offer gold-gilded altars and ceiling by Giuseppe Petti of Oratino. There is a very nice museum dedicated to the Samnite culture. The main piazza of the city is large with many stores, gelaterias, cafes, etc. And each night brings the passeggiata. Campobasso is home to the University of Molise and has a modest night life. It is also home to i Misteri, the most important festival of Molise. It takes place on Corpus Domini and features "machines" (with live characters, mostly children, being carried around the town in a procession) that were built in the mid-1700s by Paolo Saverio di Zinno and have been used each year since. There are also several 3-star hotels and a good number of fine restaurants.
And apparently they have an active chamber of commerce branch office in New Jersey. :-) Very helpful information, John.
