Camping with RV/

WE have considered renting a RV and touring for one week in Italy. I don't find any references in 2018 book to this subject. Are camp grounds available and at what price?

Some years ago, I rented a motorhome in Paris and drove down through France, Italy, and Germany. It was an incredible experience for my then 13 and 11 year old children. We rented the motorhome for three weeks, and a one week trip seems a bit rushed.

Aside from figuring out where to rent the motorhome, you will need to decide on where you want to visit, and along with that, the difficulties of staying in campgrounds. Example: Rome has very few campgrounds, and they are relatively devoid of shade and decent amenities. In contrast, there is a lovely campground in Lido Ostia, about an hour distant from downtown Rome. The campground in Venice, Camping Fusina, was wonderful, on the edge of the lagoon, with relatively frequent vaporetto sailings to San Marco. Camping in Pisa was a bit remote from the downtown, but it had decent amenities. Be prepared for most of the campgrounds to be on the periphery of the major cities or in resort areas. One of our favorite campgrounds of all was in Cervo, on the Ligurian Riviera, and we spent a wonderful couple of days away from the world eating gelato and pizza rustica.

Be aware that Italy isn't a small country, and driving times are a serious drawback to renting a motorhome. Still, it was a great time for us.
