CAMPING IN ITALY

We are landing in Rome at the end of June on a 3 week camping holiday from South Africa. We have a hiking tent and planning to rent a car and travel around Italy. Please give us info on camping sites in or outside Rome. As it is summer holidays in Europe we are aware that it will be crowded but still would prefer less commercial camp sites.
We are not familiar with European camp sites. Your info would be appreciated. Thank You

The above is the main portal for campsites in Italy.
You can search by region, province, comune (city).
Most campsites are at or near summer holiday spots (beach, lakes, mountains), but some are near major cities. June is not yet high season (mid July to late August are), therefore you should find plenty of accommodations in most campsites. I never had problems at beach locations in July before the 15th. I don't know about the city of Rome. But with a car you can easily stay on the coast, just 25km away.
Camping Village Roma is the closest to the city center.
Happy searching.
