Campi Flegrei shore excursion from Naples

I am considering the following shore excursion from Naples. For those who have been to Campi Flegrei and area, what is your opinion of this excursion. It is about 5 1/2 hours long and a reasonable price.

Campi Flegrei Grand Tour

Enjoy the rare opportunity to drive through a still-active volcanic landscape and recount the experience while dining at an estate in the surrounding countryside. The Campi Flegrei or “burning fields” is an intriguingly hellish landscape within a massive volcanic caldera. While traveling through this incredibly picturesque area, you can expect to see steaming fumaroles, thermal pools and an archaeological site where an ancient Greek settlement was excavated. Stops along the way will allow time to snap photos of the hauntingly beautiful terrain and Casina Vanvitelliana, an 18th-century royal hunting lodge situated in the middle of Fusaro Lake. You will also see Lake Avernus, which was considered to be an entrance to the underworld in ancient times. After settling in at an estate nearby, you will be served a lunch of Neapolitan specialties made with ingredients grown in the area’s fertile volcanic soil.

I never visited Campi Flegrei although I was quite close, I was aware that some of the odours from the are a bit sulphurous.

This sounds like it could be quite fun for you - you will only have enough time at the stops to take photos and back on (I don't expect there to be toilets at those stops but maybe somebody will correct me), very limited walking (Level 1??), and drive by the Lake Avernus - you'll need the guide on the bus to tell you that you are there and what you are looking at, and then a restful and tasty meal.

If I wanted a quiet scenic day I might choose that.

Where is the ship from there? How long is the drive to and from?

Hi Nigel

This excursion is Level 1 which is the easiest and open to persons who are disabled and mobility impaired. It is mostly panoramic with very little walking.

The ship ports in Naples and does not give any indication of how far Campi Flegrei is from the port although it is probably easy enough to find out. Since the entire excursion is only 5 1/2 hours long which includes a meal, it can not be too far.

There are currently only 5 excursions offered from Naples but it is early. Still this one did attract me so thought that I might begin asking questions.

I accept that unless I choose surgery on my knee, I will be limited in what excursions I can take.

Google maps shows that it is about 11 miles from the port.

News reports indicate that there is a lot of seismic activity in the area currently, which could lead to an eruption.

If you look on a dedicated cruise newsboard, you may actually find a review or a post by a person who actually went on this excursion. I have never heard it mentioned on this newsboard. I would point out that many cruise-ship excursion customers actually denigrate "drive-by" excursions. I mention that not to minimize your knee problems, but to point out that you have very specific needs, and they conflict with the desire of most excursions to provide direct contact with the destination. How many times are you prepared to climb the steep steps of a 49-passenger bus? Have you gone online to look at pictures of Campi Flegrei? I see that it is also known as Phlegraean Fields.

Here is how to look at an unknown destination on Google Maps:

Hi isn31c

I think that if there is any chance of. an eruption come next October, this excursion would be cancelled. At least I hope so.

Hi TIm,

Are you thinking of cruisecritic? I do not find it user friendly. I use it to find a roll call for my cruise and sign up for the Meet & Greet when on the ship.

Once they had. pages with reviews of ports and excursions but they no longer have these pages.

You can get reviews of ships and of cruises but very little having to do with individual ports.

And keep in mind that there are the staff reviews, all of whom sail free, and almost certainly get the white glove treatment. Then there are the guest reviews which are often mixed. One person says that it is the best cruise ever and the next person says "Never again. Worst cruise ever'

I also find it complicated to get the information that I am seeking.

R S Forum is actualy more user friendly than cruisecritic. I get more information from this forum than from CC.

I am not looking for anyone who went on the excursion that I am asking about. I was more interested in hearing from those who have ever gone to Campi Flegrei and knows the area. I was hoping that they might be able to evaluate the excursion but I see where my posting may be misleading.

I actually lived in the area in the 90s. I personally would not hesitate to take the tour. The area is of major historic and literary importance. When I lived there, hardly any tourists visited the area and I would be alone when I visited Cuma. I am assuming that they are referring to Cuma when they mentioned the Ancient Greek settlement. If so, the Cave of the Sybil is located there. Do a little research on the area and read the significance of the area to Virgil’s Aeneid to see if that interests you. The food is also fantastic, so hopefully they pick a good restaurant!
