late april 2011, I will be in Campania area for 3 weeks. I plan on basing in Sorrento for 2 of those weeks to see Pompeii, Capri, and the Amalfi coast. However, I have ancestors in Avellino area (Candida) about an hour north of Sorrento. I would like to spend 2 days in that area and would need a suggestion for a nice hotel. But... But the main question is: is it better to head straight for that area hotel when first flying into Naples, or to stay in Naples for a few days doing day trips to Avellino. I will not be driving and will rely on public transport, or driver once in Avellino, for the area sights.
Anyone familiar with that area? or who has suggestions, I would be most grateful.
Hi Jeanne, My friend and I drove to Avellino last year as, I thought, that was where my grandmother came from. Since being home, I found she came from Roccabascerana in the mountains but in the Avellino province. I think if I were you, I would stay in Naples overnight or a couple of days and sightsee where you have the time then head out to Avellino. We rented a car from Rome and drove all over the place with no problem and we are in our 60s. Once in Avellino, I was disappointed as I was hoping it would be a village but it was built up with many apartment buildings which, I think, were built up after the war as that area was pretty much damaged. We stopped in a couple of hotels but they smelled of smoke. We decided to leave after driving around for a while and as soon as we got on the main highway (S.S.7 Avellino Est)
we found a nice hotel. The Belsito Hotel "Le Due Torri". It was very nice, a businessman's hotel, and right outside of Avellino. Their website is: www.belsitohotelduetorri.it and their breakfast was very good also. If you have a driver, I'm sure he could recommend a place to stay also. Have fun! Mary Floridia-Rankin
