We want to spend our 1st night in Italy in Camogli. We were going to book a hotel at a low-priced hotel called Albergo Augusta for one night, but there is no parking in hotel. I have heard that it's very hard to park in Camogli. Any one have any advice? (first time in Italy...renting a car...making few to no hotel reservations ahead of time!)
I found this area to be well served by train and other forms of public transport when I was there last summer. Would you consider not renting a car? Camogli has a train station. If you are not travelling in summer, it will probably be easier to find parking. Also, weekends will probably be busier.
The plan for us is to drive around Italy ... towards Tuscany...no reservations, except for our 1st night....so, we are picking up a car in Milan, and Camogli was to be our first stop. We've already reserved a car (going in mid-May) and wanted to have our 1st night booked. Any suggestions on another location to stay 1st night? thanks!
If its your first trip to Italy, you might consider making more reservations in advance to avoid wasting time and frustration, especially if you don
t speak Italian and are planning to visit small villages. Also, keep in mind that fuel costs are MUCH higher in Italy. You will probably get more useful advice from this site if you give more details about your itinerary (how many days will you be in Italy; are you arriving in Milan and which airport? Where are you leaving from, etc). If I were you, I would consider not renting a car for my first trip to Italy, unless you have experience driving in other parts of Europe. There is some good advice from Ken on driving on Italy on this post: http://www.ricksteves.com/graffiti/helpline/index.cfm/rurl/topic/82141/northern-italy-to-vienna-austria.html
We much prefer the train to driving in Italy as well. We stayed at Albergo Camogliese in Camogli (very reasonably priced) and they do offer parking for 15 euros. Book the parking when you book your room.
