I just returned from Italy & spent 3 nights at Camere Nicolina (not Nicoleta), which is perhaps what you meant since this is the one RS speaks about in his book. We stayed in San Giovanni #7 - a quad with terrace & private bath. We debated about staying here because there were so few photos on the website, but it fit our criteria - we needed a Quad, we wanted a terrace, and it was within our budget. Here are the pros and cons: Con #1 - The bathroom was small and cramped. There was not a traditional shower (which I know about ahead of time). Instead it was a small bathtub (probably 1/3 the size of a standard American tub)with a spray nozzle and no shower curtain. The toilette was squeezed between the wall and the tub. A larger or very tall person might be uncomfortable with this situation. Con #2 -Bear in mind that I'm a neat freak, but the place felt that it could have been cleaner and more sanitary. It wasn't terrible, but compared to all the other places we stayed, it just wasn't as clean. Now for the Pros. Pro #1 - large spacious room with a table and chairs for eating and a mini-fridge. Pro #2 - There was a small narrow terrace with 3 chairs. A real plus in Vernazza. We spent a lot of time on this small charming terrace. Pro #3 - Location, location, location - we were on the breakwater side of Vernazza so we had a view of the beach/water, the mountainside and the church. Piazza Marconi was just below our room but we could not see it. Pro #4 - Relatively speaking, not too many stairs to our room - many rooms had a much tougher climb. Nicolina has several rooms, so I don't know about her other rooms, but I found several reviews for Camere Nicolina on tripadvisor.com. Keep in mind that Vernazza is a busy and crowded place, so it can be noisy when your trying to fall asleep. If your room faces Piazza Marconi, this will likely be the case. Bring earplugs. My advice is to get a room with a view or better yet a terrace & enjoy spectacular Vernazza.
