I know a lot of places you can't take pictures e.g. Scavi tour, David etc. I was just wondering is it still OK to have your camera on your person. I would rather not check my camera with my other bags. Particulary concerned about Scavi tour. Thanks!
Brian,
The only place you might have to check your Camera is the Borghese Gallery in Rome. I had to check my larger dSLR, but they didn't say anything about the smaller Camera that I was carrying, so I kept it with me.
They don't allow photos in the Borghese, and I'm sure this is rigidly enforced. There are Attendants in each room, and CCTV Cameras everywhere. While some may have gotten away with this, I suspect that anyone trying to "sneak" a photo would be subject to a humiliating exit from the gallery!
Cheers!
They do allow you to take your camera in both places. My camera bag was fairly large and I thought they may ask me to check it for the Scavi tour but they said it was ok to keep it with me.
Had my camera with me, but did not take pictures on Scavi Tour or Sistine Chapel. You can find some great pictures to download from google of Sistine Chapel, but I couldn't find any of Scavi tour.
We saw a man sneaking some pics at the Borghese, but when we looked for him later on, he was gone. We figured he was asked to leave. Not worth the risk, too many cheap picture books available at the gift shop.
There are art museums in Europe where the guards have been instructed to closely enforce the no photo rule. You never know in advance which museum guards have been instructed to do so. Taking an unauthorized pic in these museums can get you seriously embarrassed and even thrown out. Others don't enforce their rules, but it's difficult to tell which ones will throw you out and which will look the other way.
Thanks for the advice.
Thanks for the advice.
Usually the rules for the particular museum you are visiting will be printed (on the back (?) of the ticket. Sometimes there is also a large sign. Sometimes they do allow photos but NO flash is to be used, sometimes No photography at all -
Just ask when you enter if you are not sure. If you have a smallish camera & it would fit inside a cargo pocket or jacket pocket I would slip it inside before entering the museum rather than check it. Then if it is permissable to use, you will have it - otherwise just don't pull it out.
