Cameras allowed on Leaning Tower?

I know you can't carry bags up the Leaning Tower of Pisa, but are cameras allowed? How about at the top of the duomo in Florence?

Cameras are allowed on top of the tower in Pisa. Don't know about the Duomo in Florence.

No problem taking a camera to the top of the Duomo in Florence.

The other respondents are misinformed. Cameras are not allowed up the Tower. The rationale is this: You get a bunch of tourists with their cameras (extra weight), all leaning over the already-leaning side of the Tower to get "that perfect shot", and that combined weight and momentum is enough to pitch the tower past its balance point, causing it to fall to the ground and killing a few tourists in the process. Immediate bad press, and of course, the tower is no good after that, so bad for the long-term economy, reputation, etc. I'm joking of course. Or am I....??

Mike, I like that one!! Maybe that's why they spent all that money to keep it from further tilting. I've taken my camera up on the tower a few times. I have some great shots of the city from atop the tower. You cannot take a huge camera bag, so check all your major gear and carry as little as possible. And do be aware of the bells on top. My wife about fell off when they started unexpectedly. She's afraid of heights and you'll see once you're up there how challenging this was for her. There are steps that slant down from the top to the railing and kids were running around... it was just too much for her! Kids on top of the tower The bells and one brave wife!

So Mike, using that logic, if we get enough people up here with cameras on the high side, we could get it to sink too, evening the whole thing out. I like it. The Pisans might not, though, as their cash cow wouldn't be such a draw any more. Good to know about the bells, Ron. I can imagine how that would freak out an unsuspecting tourist, particularly one worrying about the height already.
