Calling our Agriturismo in Italy

We'll be driving from Genoa to near Siena and will be arriving at our rental apartment in the evening on a Sunday. The apartment we'll be staying at in Italy wants us to call them 30 minutes before we arrive. To avoid high cell phone fees, I would like to purchase a calling card and use a pay phone. However, I've read that pay phones are becoming extinct in Europe. I'm also concerned whether we'll happen to be near a phone 30 minutes before we arrive (we'll be in a car driving in an unfamiliar Italy). Any advice on how I should handle this?

Thanks.

Get yourself an unlocked GSM cell phone and buy a SIM card when you get to Italy. You will then have an Italian phone number. Rick discusses this in his books.

One word of caution about buying a sim in Italy to make calls. I did that and was not able to understand the prompts (in Italian of course) for making a call. It was halfway through our 3 weeks in Italy before i found someone who could explain it to me! If you currently have a phone that will work in Europe and plan to only make this call, it would be easier and less expensive to just use your phone to call.

Have you considered Skype as a possibility?

I created an account and installed the app on my Samsung phone. Then I purchased $10 in Skype credits. As long as I'm in wifi range, I can dial telephone numbers anywhere at a fraction of mobile rates.
