calling on all seasoned italy travelers...favorite restaurant recs

been to other European countries, but never to Italy. heading to Venice, Florence, Orvieto and Rome in about a week.....looking for recommendations for favorite restaurant spots...looking for suggestions for casual; nice; and special occsion, and great aperitivo spots. We will be looking for 1 special occasion dinner for our 30th anniversary and then a mixture of casual and nice for lunches and dinners. We have no problem walking around quieter, more local neighborhoods to find great spots but always enjoy a good recommendation for a specific restaurant or a great neighborhood
Thank you...we are getting excited

When in Rome you must walk over to the charming neighborhood Trastevere where there are many small, quaint, wonderful restaurants. Highly recommend Otello for delicious food. In Venice find Al Timon.for good food. Sit outside on the canal and enjoy their wonderful Cicchetti with a refreshing Aperol.

In Venice, between the Rialto Bridge and Piazzale Roma on the same side of the Grand Canal as the fish market, is an out of the way place named Pane Vino e San Daniele on Calle Dei Boteri. Definitely a hole in the wall local place, good food, good house wine, and not expensive at all.

Many canal side places lack quality. There is an exception. It is Trattoria Da Giorgia ai Greci. It is very close to San Marco, but well away from the crowds, and has really good food.

Trattoria Da Marco Valla Fava on Calle Stagneri is in the Rialto Bridge area on the same side of the canal as the train station. It is a bit on the pricey side, so you might want to do lunch rather than dinner. Unless you want to have a special dinner there. Some of the best sea food ever!! Try to eat inside rather than outside. The place has been around at least 50 years so they must be doing it right. Never had to have a reservation for lunch, but for dinner it would be a good idea.

There are a couple of places we like to eat in Florenece.

Giglio Rosso located at 35 via Panzani. Their web site is

Olio & Convivium Gastronomia Restaurant. It's on the Pitti Palace side of the river on Via di Santo Spirito. Wonderful atmosphere, excellent food, and good wine. A bit pricy, (but well worth it) so you might want to try it for lunch rather than dinner. But will also be a great place for a special dinner. The web site is https://oliorestaurant.it/.

You should be able to check out the menues, prices and such on the web sites for all of the places mentioned..

I’ve posted this before, but we enjoyed a fantastic “pizza flight tasting” in Orvieto last year. Claudio Al Vicolo is the name of the place. More details and other Orvieto recommendations in this thread: Best Wine and Food in Orvieto

And I’m a bit of a broken record on this, but I always enjoy Renato e Luisa in Rome, near Largo Argentina.

Cipasso and Casa Bleve are two of the most memorable meals we had in Rome. Cipasso is a small place, we booked a table as soon as they opened up reservations for our dates. Casa Bleve is bigger but also need to book early. Ferno has the best white pizza.
