Calling Italy from US to register for Venice visit-

I filled out the entire form(available now) which gives a number to call in Italy to confirm. I dial 011 for the US outside line then 39 for Italy and the number and it won’t go through. I tried a number of times and a couple of variations just in case!
I have T-Mobile, but I’m sure I can call internationally with our plan. Message-the call cannot be completed as dialed OR call failed.

Anyone else experiencing difficulty completing the call therefore unable to receive confirmation for exception for a stay?
We are there during days it is required. Plus I will need to do it again for a later stay by myself. Frustrating.

For Italian numbers you normally do not drop the 0 in the number (like in other countries). So you dial +39 0 .....

BTW: Store numbers in your phone in international format. Works a lot better.

Interesting. I’ll try again. I had added the 0, but before the 39 not after.
As far as the plus sign, I have never had to do so when calling England, but…..
EDIT to add: The 0 after the +39 is already in the format.

You are given 60 seconds to complete the call, so can’t take the time to enter it into my phone!

From other information, the number isn’t necessarily even answered, just an acknowledgment that it was completed.

Thanks for such quick responses.

Well…..tried every combination and then some-still no success.
There is the chance although I find it a bit unbelievable that the number in Italy isn’t on line yet! I don’t know how long the registration page has been up, so maybe the best for me is wait a coupe of days and try again.
However, if anyone else has any suggestions, I’m willing to take a stab at it.

Our stay isn’t until April, but if I can get it done all the better.

For anyone else filling out the request, it’s a bit tricky but stick with it.

1) Finding the US flag to put in your phone number is aways down the scroll. And before you finish entering your number the second time a message will pop up that it isn’t the correct format. Ignore it and continue on.
2) You can either manually enter the address of your accommodation or it will self populate from a scroll down list. Choose the Manually Enter if that is what you are doing.
3) Enter an actual number for people staying in the residence, not spelling it out. Duh, I guess!
4) You will need to add the name/names of all people staying. The calendar for birthdates was a type I’ve never encountered before. Hold down on the year and it will give you choices. Once I used it a few times, then I understood it.

No options. Wish there were. It’s fill out the form, hit confirm, dial the number that I can’t get to work which I believe will just bring up Confirmed and give me the registration number.

Most of the options I have used = This call cannot be ccompleted as dialed. Please hang and try again. The site itself allows many chances to place the call. I must be missing something or I continue to make the same mistake that I’m not recognizing or it just isn’t going to work yet.

I would think the number would take calls 24/7 as those calls will be coming from all over the world. Besides there is no mention it’s just certain hours, but maybe?

Tomorrow is another day.

I've never heard of such an arrangement for 2 factor verification. Please excuse the question - are you sure that is the authentic site?

Have you considered Skype? A few cents and it is easy to get the number right.

If you are using a mobile (cell) phone as it sounds like you are, the complete sequence should be, and you can create a contact and just dial that, is

+390number with no spaces or punctuation or parenthesis. The 0 is if there is one ... +3909123456 sort of thing. Don't put a zero before the country code.

Use 011 if you want, but using + means the phone will do it for you correctly.

If it is an iPhone when you create a contact it will guide you through composing the number..

Good luck

Thank you Nigel!

It is definitely the official sight: https://cda.veneziaunica.it/en

The call has to be made from the number used on the form for a contact number-in my case my cell phone. Not sure Skype fits the bill and I haven’t used Skype in ages so hard telling.

This is how the number comes up on the site: (+39) 0412744666. In my call list, the 011 39 041 2744666 (7 calls) and
011 +390412744666 (2 calls) all recognize Venice as where the number is located. I think these are the calls that I got the recording; Call failed. I have 8 additional stabs that say unknown per the location. Those were my attempts at trying different but possibly okay configurations of the Italian number.

It’s also possible that the line is just plain busy so the call fails. The site has only been up since 16JAN and if all the tour companies and locals, etc are using the sight , maybe it’s just busy and can’t handle the influx.

Maybe you will recognize something I’m doing that isn’t quite right. As I said in an earlier post I’ve not had difficulty when calling cousins in the UK.

EDIT: One combination I didn’t try is the simple one of course which is to input it exactly as written. I’m off to try again.

Well, rats! That didn’t work either. Tried 17 times just in case it might find that nano second to connect. “Call failed”. When the 60 seconds was up, a notation came up that one of the numbers was an error. I ignored it and kept trying but,
oddly enough when I tabbed back, the form had decided my number was a +1 from Canada. I could not get it to change. In fact, I couldn’t even find the +1 US designation anymore.

Definitely a day to be done trying. Tomorrow it is!

I would have given up long before you. I love Venice but that would driven me crazy. Can you just do it when you are there, maybe it is geofenced some way.

When is your trip?

@Nigel
I did read through the FAQ and seem to remember there are very specific situations that allow for arrival registration. We don’t qualify! There must be bugs to work out yet in the system, so hopefully by April we will have it accomplished.

I don’t know the term geofenced but it sounds like a good one. I’m pretty sure I can’t be the only one having issues. I’ll keep trying a few times a day and maybe it will magically occur. HA!

And if I do figure out the magic formula, I’ll be back.

Hi, from what I have been reading about the visitors pass, in 2024 there are only 20 days on which it will be required, none in April. After registering you should have received a QR code so it is possible that they don’t send anything unless you are visiting on those specific dates. I also read on the visit-Venice site that you don’t need to register unless you will be in Venice on those days. We will be there in September so will check a bit closer to the date of our arrival. Good luck with trying to call them, maybe stay up after midnight tonight or get up very early tomorrow morning to try again, that way you’ll be calling during their business hours. Safe travels.

@Rosemary,
Actually there are a few days in April, the 25th to the 30th. We will be there from the 19th to the 28th so indeed I do need to register for the 25th through the 28th. Then I will be there the weekend of 18-19JUNE, which are required days too.

I tried again today and believe me, I am very frustrated. I really don’t understand why the process changes the +1 designation for the US to the +1 designation for Canada. I think that is the reason my call won’t go through.

I have a request for information from Citta Venezia in hopes I get a reply that makes sense. Otherwise, I’ll wait until the end of February in case there was a bloop in the system and it might be fixed by then.

If I continue to have problems? Well, I’m hoping a solution appears somewhere on something-the news, here, somewhere. There is a possibility that kiosks will be available in Piazzale Roma or at Santa Lucia for those of us that haven’t been successful. I’m hoping we have our QR code prior to arrival as I bet those machines will be mobbed. Plus the official Venezia site indicates they will only be for very special circumstances. As with any new implementation of such a system, there has to be problems that need tweaking.

Hi, from what I have been reading about the visitors pass, in 2024 there are only 20 days on which it will be required, none in April.

A recent CNN article https://www.cnn.com/travel/article/venice-entry-fee-explained/index.html indicates a total of 29 days including the period from April 25 to May 5, then most weekends through mid July. The site linked above in one of the OPs responses shows the same. Oddly, the first weekend in June (June 1 and 2) is not included, the only weekend for the period.

I do recall this being labeled a trial period, so it is possible that additional days may be added past mid-July, Venice does not get less crowded after mid-July.

"And if I do figure out the magic formula, I’ll be back."

Please! I have to do this for a visit in May so would love to know if you figure it out. I'm not even sure I can call internationally with my cell phone -- I have a pretty basic plan with Boost Mobile.

Amazing! I now have the QR code for our April visit.

After another few unsuccessful tries with +1 USA, I decided to just go with what the form wanted which was a +1 Canada. Instead of choosing the +1 for the US from the drop down, I chose + 1 Canada, used my cell number (which is a US number) and the call went through!

Now I need to try again for my May visit the weekend of the 18th-19th. Oh my. Hope it works the same.

EDIT to add: The call will register as “Call failed”, but then the approval pops up. Just another learning curve! And yes, I have my other one too.

yay!!! Want to share any other secrets?

@nigel
I could share other secrets, but I promised not to tell:)

As far as the form, nothing. I did change a couple of other inputs, such as no commas used in addresses for places of birth and our home address, but when it comes right down to it, I think their system must have my cell area as Canada.

I’m just happy it finally worked so I can check that task off the ‘to do’ list!

I did receive an answer from Dime_Venezia about my issue!

*It is not clear to us if you call from Canada or the USA, you indicate the prefix you think is correct even if it is not that of your nation. The important thing is that the number you call with is identical to the one indicated on the previous screen.

So, there it is. The +1 Canada could certainly be the issue if the +1 from USA doesn’t work! Not sure I would have known to do that from their answer, but since it worked all is well.

I’m curious.
Who is going to be checking these passes??
Where will these checkers be checking these passes??
What will they do with you if you don’t have one??
“Get back on the train, you….”
If you didn’t know about it, how would you get one at short notice ….in Venice?

I’m a bit skeptical…..

I was able to just click on the number as a link, it came back as confirmed and sent the
QR code. I didn't have to dial anything. Hopefully this is the norm!

I found this thread so informative….and I thought I’d add a few thoughts. I just registered on the website for our visit in May, and the website is quite user friendly until..yep...you get to the phone call. Still easy, really, but you must call from the number that you have provided on the forms and you have 60 seconds to dial. Not a problem, but you’re really not expecting that. Of course, the registration can be done on a phone, but I filled out the forms on my iPad, then used my phone to call…easy to see that the call was “accepted” on the screen. Your QR codes, and their delivery choices follow. Oh, and we also chose “Exemption” because we are staying at a B&B, which pays a tourist tax. If you are staying in a hotel or B&B, the name should show up on the drop-down list that pops up. Our B&B is still getting updates from the city, so things may change a bit.

Thanks for adding info Cathy. Still in its’ infancy, there are bound to be more than one way to get this accomplished. Sounds like you had a far easier time than I did, but since we’re both set-yippee!

We’re staying in an airbnb and their address did not self populate, so figure they aren’t part of the exemption for tourist tax yet. Good to know that some B&B’s are listed.

Thank you very much for this thread. I was just battling the validation phone call as you initially did. After reading this thread and also looking at the screen prints on the CNN article, I realized my problem was the format I entered for my phone number - (XXX)XXX-XXXX. Once I took out the () and -, it went through.
