My family of 5 adults plan to take a taxi from our apartment in the Campo de Fiori area to the bus station at Tiburtina. We want to be picked up at 6:00 am. How early do we call for the taxi and which phone number would you recommend we call?

I like to use 06-3570. Assuming you do not speak Italian...say as clearly as possible your exact address (ex: via Santa Maria 13) and request a cab for 5 people. Most cabs only take 4. Call about 15 minutes ahead of time, just-in-case, but chances are it will be there in 5 minutes. After you request the cab the dispatcher will hang up quickly, but you can stay on the line for a brief message and some music. Eventually a voice will come on saying "Il taxi Brescia 54 (or some such combo if city and #) arriva in X minuti." If you hang up, the taxi will still come; you just won't know exactly how long it will take.

And remember that the meter starts when the cab is called so it will arrive with a charge on the meter.
