We are thinking of visiting the region of Calabria September 2026. We would like to do it on our own. Fly from NY to Naples drive around for 2 weeks and return to Naples. We have driven from Rome to Tuscany and from Venice around the area north. Also from Rome to Puglia, Sicily and Sardinia. All on different trips. Just starting to research the area and must see and do. We do not speak Italian and have had to use translate apps in the more remote villages. What can we expect?
Any thoughts or advice is greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Lorie
My first bit of advice would be to fly into Lamezia Terme if you are concentrating on Calabria.
Are you interested in beaches?
Hi,
Yes, we are interested in beaches. Also interested in history, food, wandering around smaller villages and towns. Lamezia Terme I think is a regional airport. We would have to fly into Rome and transfer. I was thinking about flying into Naples and pick up a car from there and drive south.

Naples is well worth a visit We’ve traveled to Calabria the last two years driving from Naples. We stopped in Paestum and visiting the Cilento coast the way down. Farther down, we stayed in Sapri, Cirella, Lamezia Terme (with a free natural hot spring pool) and Tropea, which is worth a few days. We do not speak more than a few phrases in Italian and did not have difficulty.
