Anyone familiar with Calabria? Traveling to see family in Vienna Austria and Calabria. Don't know best way to travel from one place to the other. Flights seem expensive about $500. Direct train in about 15 hours - quite long
Any ideas how to break it up?
Thank you
Where have you checked? What month? I would think there would be many low-cost seasonal flights in summer. Which airport do you need to get to?
For information, you might try some of the more expansive guides, Lonely Planet would be a good start.
If you have some time, then there are some fantastic places in between, Venice, Florence, Rome, Naples/Pompeii/Amalfi Coast, just to name the highlights.
Austrian Airlines and Eurowings both have non stop flights from Vienna (VIE) to Lamezia Terme (SUF) in high season (although not every day of the week). If you travel after April check those out. In June Eurowings wants under 200€.
Vienna can be expensive to get out of. Lamezia Terme is the airport you probably want, as Roberto suggested, but it depends on where in Calabria you plan to visit.
Train tickets would cost 100 - 200 euros per person in the cheapest class of service, depending on how far ahead you book them. The most obvious place to break up a train ride is at Venice, where you have to connect trains. Time saved by flying is worth something.
My family comes from Calabria and we've been there many times. The main airport there is Lamazia Terme, as Roberto mentioned. Training there from Vienna would be, IMHO, TOO long. If you are flying there check Skyscanner, Kayak, or any other airline site for all prices. Two years ago we flew from Vienna to Venice on German Wings at a very low price. Check and see if they provide service to SUF. Another option, if you have the time, would be to train to a halfway destination, visit and spend the night and then continue to Calabria.
The airport in Lamezia Terme is modern and looks like a big red pipe.
Buon viaggio,
