calabria - genealogy

I have been researching family history for approx. 6 yrs. Would like to visit in April 2012. Some area are: Stilo, Longobuocco, Bivogni, Monasterace. Mapping looks to be very north & then very south. Can this be done in 1 trip (10days)?

Sure, just depends on how time you want to spend in each location. Should consider an open jaw ticket - into Milan and home Rome or the reverse.

looks doable... If visiting Calabria is your primary focus. The two areas are about 4 hours apart by car. The problem is Calabria is rather removed from the international gateways most US flights go to. You are about 6.5 hours by train fron FCO to Cosenza and about 4.5 hours from Naples to Cosenza. So you will likely burn most of 2 days on travel to Calabria. When you get there, you will find some records in the Municipio but the best bet would be the parrish office in each of the villages.

Google maps is a great tool for this. The baseball game I'm watching is pretty boring (the Phillies are choking) so I played around with your question. You might take a look at Google Maps too. Assuming that you drove from Stilo to Longobucco and assuming that you stayed along the coast to Corsia in order to avoid narrow mountain roads as much as possible, the drive would be about 150 miles. Google Street view has all of your roads and towns very well covered so you can "drive" every route and perhaps see the houses that you might visit. If you look at Google Maps Terrain you will see that 3 of your destinations are up in the mountains on narrow winding roads, so you might want to investigate road conditions (ice in the mornings, maybe even Spring snow) up there in April.

Thanks to all who have replied. Sounds like I'll have to do some real planning. I need to pull out all my research paperwork & continue thinking.
