Does anyone know much about the region of Calabria, places to go, things to see, best time of year for seasonable weather, etc?
The weather should be similar to California. Hot summers, mild winters. There are high mountains, so ski resorts are available too in winter.
Start from here.

My family comes from Lamezia Terme in Calabria and we've been there 10 times since 1980. We've only been there in the summer when it is HOT. During the summer of 2007 the temp was 115° F and the Calabrese were complaining about the heat.
Places to visit in no certain order: Tropea and its duomo, beach, and town. Reggio Calabria to see the Riace Bronze Statues at the national museum and the ocean promenade across from Sicily. Le Castelle in Capo Rizzutto-a 10th century Norman castle. My favorite pizzeria in the whole world at Pizzeria Zi Pino in Falerna Marina along with the gelato at Caffe Vittoria nearby on SS18.
Our favorite hotel is Savant Hotel in Nicastro and we've stayed there many times. Their restaurant serves great antipasti and pasta dishes.
Buon viaggio,
