C4 couchette and 2 person sleeper

My husband, I and our 20 month old baby will be taking a night train from Rome to spiez in luna.
Is it preferable to use a 2 person sleeper or a 4 person couchette? my baby will share my berth or Do I need to reserve another sleeper for my baby in which case we will need a 3 person...do I have to pay for her sleeper as well..../
we will be travelling with some luggage as well.. How safe are the night trains?

Here is a quote from the Trenitalia site: "Children younger than 4 travel free of charge in both first and second class but they do not have the right to a seat." Unless you buy tickets for all of the beds, sleepers are restricted to the same sex. Paying for all three beds in a 3-bed sleeper would cost more than buying two beds in a 2-bed sleeper. So it appears to me that you should choose either a 2-bed sleeper or a 4-bunk couchette. In either case, the baby will ride free.
