What is the best route to travel between the CT and Venice? We will probably spend one night along the route. It looks like we have to either travel through Florence or Milan before heading toward Venice. Is that correct? Any suggestions?
You certainly can spend a night somewhere along the way but don't really have to. The fastest run of the day departs La Spezia Centrale at 7:52am and requires one train change at Bologna to a Eurostar. You arrive in Venice about 2:10am. It's a 5.25hr journey. We've been on that run and it was just great. If you are staying in one of the CT towns, you just have to make sure that you take one of the two early trains to get to La Spezia on time.
Or, you can take the later 8:20 run with two changes at Parma and Bologna. This journey takes 5hrs-43min. But, no Eurostar. The fare for this run is 20.25Euro whereas the run above costs 36.50Euro because of the Eurostar.
Even if you want to hang out in the Ct till lunch time, you can make it to Venice before 7:30 pm.
Thank you for the prompt and detailed reply. I also appreciate the pricing information. I have had trouble trying to confirm routes and prices on the Italian rail site.
