I will be buying wine in Rome on my last day. Any suggestions as to where to purchase? I will be staying near the Colosseum. Also, does anyone know how many bottles/person are allowed through customs? I have a direct flight to US. Finally would they allow my daughter who is 17 to check wine(for me).
Felicia - the limit is 1 liter per person over 21. At least that is the duty free limit. Having said that I can tell you that we brought back 4 bottles between 2 of us in March and were not asked to pay duty. Our daughter (age 20 & traveling alone) also brought us several bottles of wine, beer & liquour at Christmas. She told the customs people how much she had and they never asked her age or made her pay any duty. We also have put wine in our 17 year old's luggage. We listed that we were bringing it back but no one questioned whose luggage was carrying it.
Your only limit is what you can pack in your checked luggage and stay in your weight limits. No liquids in your carry-on of course. Make sure you declare all of it, as already mentioned, technically you will owe duty, but I have not ever had to pay even bringing back 50 bottles one time (before strict carryon and weight limits). Since you will be travelling as a group you can put bottles in your daughters luggage as well. You can look at wine shops, but I got the best deals and a good selection at larger grocery stores.
