Buying Trenitalia tickets; Do we have to register first to buy tickets on the website?

When we were last in Italy, we had some difficulty in using a Visa credit card on the Trenitalia website, so we were not able to take advantage of the discounted rates. Has someone purchased train tickets from Trenitalia recently, who would advise us whether we need to register first in order to buy tickets? Are there any extra steps that need to be taken to have the process proceed more smoothly?
I searched this Forum and didn't see any recent comments on the topic, and would appreciate any guidance. The 2015 Rick Steves Italy did not identify any special issues, but I wanted to be ready when the dates for this future travel are listed by Trenitalia.
Thank you to all for your contributions!

You can do it without registration but register. Use your hotel for the local address. Advise your credit card issuer of the potential charge. We have had our Visa cards verified. Don't know if that helps or not. What was your exact difficulty?

You can register if you wish but I never do. I've not had any issues by not registering.

We did it two years ago, but I had to register myself in order to get it to work for me. But there was no down side to doing so.

Registering is easy, give an Italian address as advised previously. Trenitalia will never actually send you anything, except via email.
