Buying train tickets from Varenna to Pontresina

We have heard you can buy train tickets at the travel agency in Varenna since the train station is an unmanned, but what happens if the travel agency is not open? We will be there on a weekend in October. Can we buy tickets in Milan for our trip from Varenna to Pontresina? Can tickets be bought on board? Thanks for your help!

You can buy tickets at any train station. There should be a ticket machine in the station. Tickets are not sold on the train. Most likely it will be a regional train. Buy the ticket anywhere, validate, and get on the train.

The Varenna train station does not have a ticket machine. That is why every suggests buying at the travel agent. But you can also buy the tickets at a different train station before you go to Varenna. When we were there the outside validation machine did not work, but the one inside the station did. Everyone went in to validate their tickets.
