I am flying into Milan and then taking the train to Venice Santa Lucia train station. I just want to know if it is easy to just buy the train ticket when I arrive in Milan or buy it in advance. I would love to buy ahead, but you never know about delays when flying.
Buy it after you land. You can buy it at the Milan Malpensa (MXP) airport train station if you plan to take the Malpensa Express train to Milano Centrale. Just make sure you have at least 20 minutes layover to make the transfer of trains at Milano Centrale (it’s a large station).
You can buy ahead, probably at a 30-40% discount, if you want, but you take a risk if your flight is majorly delayed or canceled.
You can download the app and buy it on that once you’ve arrived
I forgot to add, I am flying into the Linate airport in Milan. I think I need to take a bus into the central station first. Correct? Then I can buy my train ticket to Venice the day I arrive?
I think there is free wifi at Linate like there is at Milan's Malpensa airport, they are managed by the same company. You could install trenitalia's and italotreno's apps now and get used to them.

Yes- bus runs every hour, takes 32 min
I'd get both apps- get used to using them (make note of what time fast trains run from Milano Centrale to Venezia SL) and purchase your tickets on the app as soon as you are ready to get on the bus to Milano Centrale.
Between Trenitalia and ItaloTreno there are fast trains almost every hour.
Thank you for the tips. I will download both apps and play around on them.
