I would like to make reservations for the train from Florence to Innsbruck on June 27th . The D Bahn site says fares are not available for this trip. Any ideas on how to do this? We have Eurail passes.
You can only make reservations, buy tickets on the dbahn site for trains either beginning or ending in Germany. The rest of the schedules are for information. Try trenitalia.
Which departure out of Florence are you planning to take?
Using the example of a departure from Firenze SMN at 10:30 and arriving Innsbruck at 16:32 and travelling with Rail passes, here are a few thoughts......
- the first segment from Firenze SMN to Bologna Centrale is a Freccia train, so has compulsory seat reservations (DON'T be caught without them or you'll risk hefty fines) - you should be able to buy reservations either on the Trenitalia website or at www.captaintrain.com. In the same situation, I'd just buy them at the station when arriving in Florence.
- the second segment from Bologna to Innsbruck only indicates "subject to reservation", so I'm not sure if that's compulsory or not? I travelled much the same route several months ago and a reservation on the EC train was not compulsory. If you want a reservation for that train also, you should be able to obtain one using the same methods as described above.
The trip is in two different segments, run by different train companies; change may be in Bologna or Verona, according to timetables.
So, first book the second segment from https://www.oebb.at/en/
When you know which is the correspondence station and time, book the first segment from Trenitalia; consider also that if you have a correspondence in Verona, the train is likely to leave from Firenze Campo di Marte instead of Firenze SMN - so if you ask for trains from SMN you are likely to see very few alternatives.
This would be the ordinary way to get your tickets. How it could work with Eurail passes, I do not know.
The note that Ken points out is not about seat reservations; it's about space reservations to carry a bicycle. However, I understand that EC trains within Italy require reservations and that's how it's stated in Eurail's timetable link, which is modified from the DB.
You can make the seat reservations at a train station or travel agency in Italy, for instance when you have your rail pass activated. Or you can book it at https://ricksteves.raileurope.com/us/rail/point_to_point/triprequest.htm, if you break the trip request into its two parts.
