Buying train tickets

My daughter and I are going to Italy in late June/early July. We are planning 4 days and 3 nights each in Rome and Florence and then 3 days/2 nights in CT followed by one last night in Rome before we fly home. I have looked at various online schedules and am finding them both incomplete and somewhat confusing. Since it appears that there are frequent trains between all these areas, can I just book all our train trips at the Amex office in Rome when we arrive, or is this too risky during the summer? Thanks for your thoughts.

You can book them all when you arrive and you can do it at the train station and not have to find an AM EX office. There is something like 50+ trains a day between Florence and Rome.

Agree with Frank. Its easy to book trains at the automated kiosks in train stations; if you can use an ATM, you can use these machines. They have an english menu (just start by pressing on the British flag). You can do this as you go, or just camp at a machine and buy all your tickets. At most train stations the line for the windows is long and slow, but if you're flying into the Rome airport then you should take the train to downtown Rome and you can buy your tix at the window of the small train station in the airport which usually doesn't have a line (I would suggest, though, having the days, route, and approximate time you want each trip written on a piece of paper; hand the paper to the clerk, they'll hand back tickets).

Thanks everyone for your advice - it being summer time, I was not sure if I would run into issues not having tickets in advance, but it seems that will not be a problem.

We are leaving in just a couple of weeks and talked to trenitalia in Italy. They recommended a place in New York called Hello Italy Tours. We just needed to have our train part booked, as we are going to also visit relatives besides going to Rome, Florence and Venice. It was an excellent recommendation. They were extremely helpful and found us great rates too.
