Buying train tickets at MXP

Do both Trenitalia and Italo have ticket machines in the Milan airport? We want to wait to purchase our train tickets from Milan to Venice until we land, but wasn't sure if both have machines there (I'm assuming we purchase them from a machine?) If so, is it possible to check schedules for each before actually using the machine? Thanks for your help...we're obviously new to this whole train experience!

Yes, there is a Trenitalia machine and a Trenord machine. I don't know if you can buy Trenitalia tickets at the Trenord ticket window there. I did not try, I just bought both tickets out of their respective machines.

I have not been in Malpensa Airport since the debut of Italo trains, but that location is not on their list for passenger services and the two companies don't cooperate. With Trenitalia running direct Frecce trains at least hourly, I wouldn't find much need for additional choices. But go ahead and print both schedules to take with you, or install schedule apps on your phone, so that schedules posted on the wall won't be your only resource.

Since Trenitalia schedules are also reflected in the DB link at How to Look Up Train Schedules and Routes Online, you might find that version easier to print out.

Without checking I don't know if both Trenitalia and Italo operate trains to Venice. I do know that you can buy the ticket for Trenitalia to Venice when you purchase the Milan express ticket to Milan Centrale. There are both machines and a ticket window. I do know that the newer ticket machine will only accept chip and pin cards so you may have to use the window. Personally I would print the train schedule prior to leaving the US so you are not dependent on finding a schedule at MXP.

Italo trains between Milan and Venice require a change at Bologna, which kills any pricing or time advantage. Stick to Trenitalia for that route.

I've never seen any Italo ticket machines at MXP, so you'll probably have to wait until you reach Milano Centrale to access those. A couple of other points to consider. As someone else mentioned, I don't believe Italo has a direct train from Milan to Venice. Also, some of their departures will be from Milano Rogoredo, which means you'd have to change stations. In this case, using Trenitalia is the best choice.

To purchase tickets, both rail networks have Kiosks near the tracks at Milano Centrale. The Italo machines are a maroon colour, so it's easy to distinguish them from the Trenitalia machines. Italo usually has a small staffed ticket booth there as well. If you'd prefer to purchase Trenitalia tickets from a staffed ticket booth, you'll have to exit the trackside secure zone and go down two floors. Note that the ticket office there often has a long queue! There are more Kiosks adjacent to the ticket office.

There are numerous Trenitalia daily departures from Milano Centrale to Venezia Santa Lucia, using either Freccia or EuroCity trains. Most are direct with a travel time of 2H:35M, but a few have one change.
