Buying train tickets

My husband and I will be going to Italy in a week and staying for about two weeks. During that period we willbe traveling from Rome (where we land) to Siena, Siena to Riomaggiore, Riomaggiore to Venice and Venice to Rome. I was on trenitalia yesterday to buy tickets and it just seemed a little confusing (ie having to make 4 stops and switch trains twice on the journey from Siena to Riomaggiore)... Is it better to just buy train tickets once we are there??

The only advantage of pre-purchase is savings on price, so you can price a ticket for tomorrow, then one for the time period you will be there, and see any difference. Unless you are able to take advantage of a deeply discounted ticket, I would just wait until you are there.

If you concern is about switching trains, that is how the system works. For some reason, many travelers expect to find direct trains to everywhere but that rarely happens except between major cities. Switching trains is common. We once had a trip where we had to change five times. It is a pain in the butt but that is how it is done. Buying tickets when you get there doesn't reduce the number of train changes.
