Buying Train Tickets

We will be traveling from Rome to Naples and then onto Sorrento. Rome to Naples by train. Is it better by the tickets on line prior to our departure from US or should we buy them in Italy? Also, same question about bus tickets to Sorrento ... and the reverse. Thanks for help!

Rome to Naples, if you buy the tickets in advance it will be cheaper. If you buy on the day the cheaper tickets will be sold out and you will have to pay the full "base" fare.
But, once you buy a ticket, that ticket is only valid on whichever train you choose, it will have train No. coach and seat No. on the ticket. You cannot change to a different train without paying more.

I have never been to Italy. Here's what I am doing. My airplane lands in Rome. Right after I get off the airplane, I am taking a train to Florence. Somebody suggested that I do not buy a train ticket for this trip in advance, in case I take too long to get from the plane to the train and miss the train. So I am buying the ticket when I arrive in Italy. I did already buy two other train tickets for train trips in italy, from Florence to Naples, and from Naples to Rome; I don't see why you shouldn't buy train tickets in advance if there is no chance you will miss your train. Print your tickets and put them in a ridgid plastic folder
and remember to take the folder in your carry on travel bag.

I have the same question. Our family is flying into Rome then directly taking the train to Naples then to Sorrento. I hesitated to purchase tickets in the event my flight is delayed and plan to purchase tickets once there. Is this reasonable? Or should I buy them now? We arrive Rome at 2:30pm

To Denise Castle Rock, Colorado
to echo Mike L : You should only buy the Rome to Naples if you are certain the flight is not going to be delayed that would cause you to miss that train.

If you buy a no change, no refund ticket in advance on-line there will always be some risk with your plane being delayed or even canceled. How great a risk?? Low but hard to judge. In our many, many years of travel we have never had a problem until last spring when our US to Europe flight was cancelled so we missed our easyJet connection that we planned with a five hour window. We thought we had covered ourselves with the big window for connect and insurance. Neither one worked.
