Buying train ticket in Italy question

Hi Folks,

I feel foolish asking this, but I have a question for those of you who are used to using the trenitalia website. When I search for the route between Rome and Naples, plenty of train departure times pop up but they all have the crossed out shopping cart symbol (meaning that I can't actually select the route and buy a ticket). Does this mean the trains are all sold out? Perhaps it just means that I can't buy the ticket online anymore, because my travel day is tomorrow, or because the online fares are sold out. This is for the Frecciarossa train.

I am wondering as I am contemplating a last minute decision to go to Pompeii for a day trip tomorrow.

Thank you for your help!

Since it sounds like you are already in Italy, it would be easiest to buy your ticket at the train station. I would be very surprised if all trains are sold out as they run hourly, if not more frequently, between Rome and Naples; you should still be able to get a ticket. You could also buy a ticket at a local travel agency (at little or no additional cost), if you want to avoid a trip to a train station. Your hotelier will know of a convenient one nearby. Once in Naples you can purchase your ticket at the train station for the commuter rail line, the Circumvesuviana, to get to Pompeii (the stop on the line for the sight is "Pompei Scavi").

You know, I think I hadn't noticed that the date field had reset itself to today's date. So that's why.

But with rain forecast for Pompeii and afternoon plans in Rome, I think all signs point to saving Pompeii for the next trip when I have time to make a full day of it.
