If you are arriving by rail to La Spezia and then taking the local Cinque Terre Express train, and intend to buy the CT + Treno card then buying online will save you the first local fare and from waiting in line at La Spezia station to buy the card. If you are just buying the CT Trekking card, you can buy that in a village before you hike. If there is uncertainty in your schedule, you should wait as you must specify the date when buying on line. Note that you need a closed shoe with a non-skid sole to hike - no sandals or open-toes.
