buying one way tickets in Rome for Florence and Pompeii while there

Should I purchase these tickets as we are ready to hop on the train or should I purchase them the day before? The trip I later have from Florence to Venice occurs one day before the supposed strike. Would that make any difference?

If you want to go to Pompei while in Rome, there are about 35 high-speeds a day from Rome to Naples. You can easily buy the tickets online if you can nail down the precise time you wish to depart. If you are arriving in Rome on a plane and then heading for the high-speed, it is suggested that you not buy in advance because planes are often late. You could miss your reservation to Naples. Once in Naples, you go downstairs to the Circumvesuviana train, which is a separate train system, and buy the very cheap train ticket to the Pompei Scavi stop. The CV is an independent train system that does not permit reservations. It's the local. You just buy your ticket and get on. If no seats, you can stand. If you need to, you can store your luggage at the entrance to Pompei. Your looking at about 2.0hrs to get from Rome to Pompei. Going the other way, there are 55 high-speed trains a day that run from Rome to Florence. Most are non-stops. No non-stops from Florence to Venice but lots of high-speeds.
