My fiance and I are flying into Rome in June, spending a couple of nights there and then taking the train to Venice before we leave for our cruise. Being a new traveler to Europe I'm wondering when I need to purchase our train tickets. Does anyone have some tips and information that will help us with this?

Buy your ticket when you are in Rome. If you are a planner and like having things scheduled and ready to go, then go to the train station the day before you depart and buy your ticket. www.roninrome.com is a very helpful Blog.
