Does anyone have any suggestions for a reputable place to buy a cameo in the Naples area? I understand that they are famous for them. My grandmother had a cameo ring and I would love to get one to remind me of her.

I have shopped for a cameo all over Italy and have found that they all look the same. It's as though the same person or workshop made them. Every face was the same, including the same "Julie Andrews" upturned nose.

The centre for cameo making is a town on the Bay of Naples called Torre del Greco. However, I buy my cameos from a store in Sorrento called Borriello which is on Corso Italia opposite the cathedral. It is owned by a family firm from T d Greco. They do more than just the "upturned nose" variety and my favourites are the grey/blue cameos.
Be wary of imports from the East.

Thanks Linda, I bet the cameos that I saw were of the Asian "factory made" variety, thus the sameness.

Scott - I also bet that some of them were made of resin rather than shell!
