Buy train tickets ahead of time?

We will be in taking the train from Venice to Florence the morning of Sunday, September 22 are are wondering if it's necessary to buy our tickets before the morning of our departure. Do the trains ever "sell out"? And is first or second class recommended?

If you book ahead of time you can benefit from "economy" tickets or the "super-economy" ones which are very cheap but non-refundable. They can be had for as cheap as 9euros. If you wait till you get there, you might not find cheap tickets, and you'd have to buy the basic fare, which is double the price. I did a quick search for Venice-Florence 22 September and there are few "economy" tickets remaining. So hurry-up, buy your ticket now! PS-If you take the regional slower train, don't forget to validate your ticket before boarding the train.

Kathy, the trains don't sell out. The main reason that people buy in advance is to take advantage of the reduced fares that are offered 120 days out from the time of travel. These tickets are non-refundable and cannot be exchanged. If you can nail down your precise travel time on Sept 22, you can register on www.trenitalia.com and buy tickets right now. Lowest fare you can possibly get is 19Euro. 9Euro was mentioned above but not for this run. I believe that the regular fare is 45Euro. Once you make the purchase, you can print out your tickets at home minutes later. 2nd class is just fine. These are beautiful high-speed trains. Here's a link to a picture of what is available now on the Trenitalia website. http://gyazo.com/db2c2bbb81bc7ea7c0537c2855e202dc By the way, my wife and daughter are 3 days behind you going to Florence. We got their tickets some time ago at the 19Euro fare.
