buy tickets online for Coloseum or buy at Palatine?

Is the wait usually minimal if I buy tickets at Palatine? Is there an online place where I can buy a ticket for a nonspecific day? We are not sure if we are going 23/9 or 24/9. Is there a ticket good for 24 hours (say 1 PM to 1PM) vs. single day? Also, are those over 65 yrs free for entry if I buy tickets at Palatine? thanks, Elaine

Another option is to buy the Roma Pass. It costs 20 Euros but gives you free admission to your first two museums or archaelogical sites, which can include the Colosseum/Palatine if you choose to work it that way. It also includes 3 days of free admission on the Metro trains and city buses, and discounts to other museums & attractions. It can be worthwhile, particularly if you plan to see more than a couple of museums or plan to ride public transit frequently.

As of a few months ago, the Colosseum tickets (include the Forum and Palatine Hill), are good for a 2-day period.

buy your tickets there! The wait should not be that bad. If you buy them at Palatine, you should not have to wait at all.

If you buy your ticket at the Palatine or at the Forum Romanum you shouldn't see a wait at all. At the Colosseum this could look very different. Ticket will cover all 3 sites and you have 2 days to visit them with this ticket.

Those over 65 and kids are free if they can proof that they are citizens of the EU. We got the free tickets for our kids at the Forum Romanum without being asked for proof but at all other sites in Italy we had to show their passports.

We walked right up to the ticket counter at Palatine Hill and bought our tickets. Then went back to the Colosseum and luckily knew to walk along the left side of the LONG line to the turnstiles. It isn't obvious that you can do that, but you definitely can.

We tried 4 tobacco shops and stands to get the Roma Pass and they all said they were sold out. We just ended up buying several bus tickets and that worked fine. We weren't going to a whole lot of sites that cost money--just Colosseum and Roman Forum. That was enough for us. We took a Vatican Tour which was worth the expense and all the other usual sites were free.
