Buy same-day tickets on site at Vatican Museums?

Hello,

I've read a lot of posts can't find one that explicitly (and recently--in the last 6 months) answers this question so I thought I'd go ahead and post ...

Heading to Rome w/ my family of 6 in early May. Official Vatican website for Vatican Museums/Sistine Chapel tickets shows all dates and times sold out for our time there. I know I can buy tickets from third-party vendors but the prices for 6 at decent times are running at least 5x as much as we'd pay on the official site. We are morning people & don't mind waiting in lines to buy tickets in person early on the day we want to visit. Is that still doable? Or do all Vatican Museum/Sistine Chapel tickets need to be purchased in advance now?

If I can purchase in person, anyone know my chances of getting 6 tickets if I'm up very early & seeking same-day tickets? Decent chances or too high a risk we'll wind up empty-handed?

Thanks in advance to anyone who knows the Vatican policy or has recent personal experience buying same-day tix on site ...

I went to the Vatican Museums in March 2023, so it was before the recent change in hours, etc. However, I'd be really surprised if they don't still have a line for people who need to buy tickets. That line used to move very slowly, but they did admit some people from that line to the building from time to time. The museums now open at 8 AM rather than 9 AM. I don't know what that means about how early you should get over there if you hope not to be in line for 2 hours (random number I pulled out of the air).

There used to be (sometimes) someone from a tour agency hanging around with excess tickets to sell. Those tickets were probably marked up, but they were a lot less expensive than taking a tour. If the tickets are now tied to a specific person's name (not sure about that), I don't know whether it would be possible to buy an aftermarket ticket that way. And needing 6 tickets would make it very tough, I imagine.

You might take a look at Get Your Guide to see whether it has cheaper tour offerings that would get you into the building. If I wanted a full-fledged tour, that's not the way I'd go, but it might be a cheaper option for folks who really want to do their own thing. The Museums have an audio guide that may help understand what you're seeing, but I stopped using mine when I noticed essentially the same information posted beside the first couple of objects I stopped at. I was happier reading the information than hearing it. Of course, it was easier for me in March; the Museums were crowded in a lot of places but not packed wall-to-wall as they may be in May. You might have trouble getting close enough to the posted information to read it.

The Vatican Museums have very rich collections, but the viewing experience in the major galleries on the way to the Sistine Chapel (and in the Sistine Chapel itself) is pretty much miserable. I think it's worth considering whether it's worth spending (potentially) a lot of time in line for such an experience. It's not as if Rome doesn't have many months' worth of other glories to see.

Thank you both. I've tried to dig around to see how 2024 changes would affect the purchase of same-day tickets on site, but it's unclear. I don't mind waiting a while in line if I know I can get tickets in the end, but if it's just a complete crapshoot, I guess it might be a bad idea. Strange there's nothing official online telling you about the buy-in-person option.

Get Your Guide had one opening that could potentially work but at a pretty bad time. Guess that's why it was still available.

You can definitely still buy them on site, but the line will be long. It’s probably best to get in line very early in the morning. You could also try at the end of the day and try to get in at one of the last entry times. The line may be shorter then. I have not done this myself however.

You don't mention actual dates - there are still late afternoon tix available on some days in early May, and a number of afternoon timeslots available on May 11.

We were there in November 2023 on a Friday afternoon with tickets for a 4:00 pm official guided tour - with tickets we were able to walk directly to the first admission checkpoint, passing a massive line of people hoping for same- day tickets.
