Buy Italo Treno High Speed Tickets in Advance?

My husband and I are planning to take a high speed train from Milan to Florence on April 23, 2026. We are now at 90 days before that train ride. We are wondering if we should buy an Italo economy or flex ticket now. Price now is 35€ (Economy - Senior) or 50€ (Flex - Senior). We don't anticipate that we'll be pressed for time to catch our train.

If we wait to buy our tickets until we actually depart, is it likely that we'll have to pay a lot more or that seats will not be available? Thanks for any insight - first time in Europe and trying to figure this out!

Since you are travelling before 2 long week-ends do not expect to find discounted tickets on sale much longer.

Discounted tickets are capacity controlled, once they are sold out you must pay the expensive Flex fare. Nobody pays the Flex fare in advance, just get it at the station before getting on. You'll always find a seat at that price, Italotreno and Trenitalia together run more than 90 trains a day on that line. More if you add the slow IC trains.

From April 24 to May 2 everybody's on vacation and many use trains to go around, don't wait too much if you want to save some money.

If you wait until you depart you have the flexibility to leave whenever you want, but you will pay full fare, which is about 60€ per person on the Smart (Economy) class.

The other company (www.trenitalia) also has similar deals, but also in that case if you wait until the day of departure, all discounted tickets will be sold out and you will be left to pay the full fare, which is also 61€ per person one way on Standard (Economy) class.

So basically you have to choose between flexibility (a discounted ticket cannot be refunded) and about 25€ savings per ticket.
