Business Class Airline tickets

U.S. to Italy - Does anyone know the best airline prices for flying business class ? Any places to search?

Your question is not unique to business class tickets - the answer to that question is the same as for any ticket: there is no single, simple, unique place to search. There are plenty of places to search - kayak.com, farecompare.com, google flights, etc. Any of them will work as a starting point. Use those as a starting point to give you some ideas, then go check out prices on the airlines' own sites. Be wary of any site that seems too good to be true or claims some miracle discounts...lots of scammers out there in this space.

I fly business pretty frequently and there are Business Class aggregators out there with some great deals. However having said that I will note that the Premium classes tend to fill and I think some of the reason is the absolute dismal state of service in the US airline industry which is a worldwide joke.

I like Emirates in any class. And when the real Swissair was still around it was wonderful. Sabena used to have great service and business was superb. There are many great Airlines out there that will treat you well and are comfortable...but not generally US ones.

You can get Business Class on Iceland Air and Condor for much less than the price of the major airlines. The downside is older planes (but comfy leather seats in our experience) and you have to fly through Iceland in the one case and usually pass through Frankfurt in the other. Service was good in both cases.

OK, but isn't that because business class on Iceland Air is really the equivalent of premium economy on the "major" British & European transatlantic airlines like AF, Virgin or BA? To be fair, I don't think Iceland sell it as "business", at least not here, but as " Saga premium".

Generally, you need to look at the actual product not the name. And that includes if you're changing aeroplane during the trip. For example, BA transatlantic business is a flat bed to London. But when you change for the second leg to Italy, the "club"/ business seat is the same as in economy, just with the middle seat empty.

Obviously there are other advantages to premium or business than just the seat, like meals/luggage/priority/etc., but the seat is the main one being paid for.

Nick is correct.

First, be sure you are comparing apples-to-apples: "business class" is a very generic term, the quality of which varies tremendously. For most of us, "business class" is mostly about the seat - specifically, a seat that converts to a lay-flat bed so you can actually sleep on the flight. You need to shop carefully, since every airline's seat is different, and seats on different planes within the same airline can range from awesome to really disappointing (United, for example, has great seats in their new "Polaris" cabins and awful seats in their old cabins) - so you need to check the specific flight to see what kind of seat you will probably get ("probably" because they can always switch aircraft at the last minute if they have to; doesn't happen every day but it does happen if there's an equipment problem). Use seatguru.com to check what kind of seat is on a specific flight (use that as a rough guide, and take note of the date of seat reviews, since aircraft do get updated).

About "business class" seats within Europe: on flights entirely within Europe, you will get what Nick describes above: a standard coach seat with the middle seat (next to you) blocked. "Business class" on these intra-Europe flights is nothing special and IMHO not worth paying extra for. If you book a flight from the US to a point in Europe which requires a connection within Europe, you should expect the "good" business class seat (well, as good as it gets on that flight on that airline) on the long flight across the Atlantic, and an unimpressive seat on the intra-Europe connection (which is usually not a huge deal, since those flights tend to be fairly short).

My husband and I just flew Icelandair to Stockholm and then back through Bergen with a stopover for 4 nights in Reykjavik. We did Saga class and I concur, its like premium economy on British Airways or equivalent. Still it is a step up from coach. I will say, if you have a longer layover in Reykjavik, the Saga Class lounge is pretty fantastic!
