We are traveling to Florence to see visit our daughter who is studying there this fall. we will be staying in Florence many days and Siena 2 days. We can't decide what to do our last weekend there-Cinque Terre or back to Sienna with side trips to the hill towns such as Montepulciano and Volterra. We do not want to drive to the hill towns, however. Has anyone taken a bus from siena to Montepulciano or Volterra? (or from Florence to these locations?) We will be traveling the last week of October and have heard the weather in Cinque Terre at that time could be rainy.
Any thoughts or advice would be helpful-thanks!
We took the bus from Siena to Volterra. You need a full day to it and you have to change buses in Colle Val d'Elsa. There are only a few buses a day so you have to be careful of the time. It was definitely worth it though.
Yes - we have taken the bus to five or six of the hill towns from Siena. You do need to allow plenty of time but if you are there for a couple of days you can easily see two or three of the hill towns. I recommend San Gimignano or Montelpuciano. Montalcino is nice as well. Haven't been to Volterra. There aren't a plethora of busses but you can do it if you keep an eye on the times the busses return and plan accordingly. If you miss the last one you will be stuck for the night! Don't let that stop you though...easily doable!
