Buses--Rome to Siena & Siena to Milano

The preponderance of opinion here is that we should use the buses, rather than the trains (which we've always used elsewhre on earlier European holidays) to travel from Rome to Siena (our Siena hotel is in town, fairly close to the Piazza), and from Siena to our Milano (preflight) hotel. Are bus reservations and/or advance bus ticket purchases necessary or useful? On a previous Italy trip, we found extra visits to the rail stations got in the way of valuable and precious touring time and always prepaid for tickets and purchased reservations on subsequent Europe trips, where we've preferred convenience over minimal price differences).

There is a very nice bus run from the bus station across the street from the Rome Tiburtina train station to the city wall in Siena. www.sena.it. About 3hrs. Not as many runs per day as the train (especially Sunday) and I understand that there are no toilets onboard but that they do stop for a toilet break after 2hrs. The Siena train station is close to a mile slightly downhill from the city so the bus is much better there. Plus, on the train, you change trains in Chiusi. I'm not familiar with the bus runs from Siena to Milan but I'm betting that you would take the SITA bus from Siena to Florence (great non-stop run on the Corse Rapide bus) and change buses for Milan (www.sitabus.it).

The bus is typically the best way to go between Rome and Siena and Siena to Florence. You might find it faster and easier to catch a train from Florence to Milan.
