Buses in Tuscany during Holidays

Hello,

My husband and I will be in Tuscany from December 26-January 2 and plan to go without a car. We will make Florence our home base, but want to spend a night in Siena (maybe NYE) and do day trips to some of the smaller towns.

Has anyone experienced the bus service in Tuscany during this time period?

How about on a holiday, like New Years Day? Do the buses run at all?

Thanks for your input!

On holidays, trains usually run similar to the Sunday schedule, or they knock off early on New Year's Eve. Florence-Siena buses might follow their Sunday schedule (I don't know), but the majority of bus routes don't run Sundays and holidays. I enjoyed driving around Tuscany but a van tour (reserved ahead) would be another possibility.

Extraurban bus lines run on a very limited schedule on Sunday and holidays and, in most cases, there will be no bus service at all on Xmas day. Don't forget that Dec 26 (St. Steven) is a holiday.
Dec24 is not a holiday.
On Saturdays bus service is almost as frequent as Mon to Fri.
Trains run all the time but slightly less frequently on Sunday's and holidays.
Moral of the story: take your bus day trips out of town on working days (including Saturday). On Sunday and holidays, stay put in Florence or, at most, take trip to a town served by trains (like Pisa or Lucca or Arezzo or also Siena.
