Buses in rome

How reliable are the city buses in rome? We have a food tour that we have to be on time for. Its just over 3.5 km, so a bit far to walk. Not on metro stop. Google maps says its about a 40 min bus ride. 20 minutes by car.

I'd prefer not to take a cab, but I dont want to miss our food tour. And I've heard buses can run way behind

Buses run to their timetable except when they don't. I found they were really good.

Put Citymapper on your phone, and you'll get live bus times

We have found the Rome bus to run pretty close to schedule but there is always the exception and it can be the next bus. It just depends on a lot of factors. I would plan on 90 minutes and find a bar if early.

Time wise walking or taking the bus work out to be about the same amount of time ( walking at a deliberate, but not forced, pace)

You could plan on a leisurely one hour walk and have be ready to 'enjoy the food'. ( Assumes there are no disability issues to contend with)

Yeah, allow yourself some cushion, most routes are frequent enough that even if late, the last late bus will be around shortly. I suppose if you are out on a route that has hourly runs, re-evaluate.
