Bus travel on Amalfi Coast

Do the SITA buses that depart Sorrento for Amalfi Coast towns also pick up new passengers in these towns when not full?

They work like most buses - they pick up and drop off, potentially at every stop.

Another way of putting it is that these are regularly circulating local public transportation, with many stops between terminal stations. They are not conceived of a purely tourist transportation services. However, certain routes, like Sorrento-Positano-Amalfi are vastly overburdened, especially in season, by visitors. In late May, every time (say, 9:00AM) we went to the Sorrento Circumvesuviana station for a daytrip, there was a line for the Positano bus that was longer than would fit on the next bus.

You question makes me think you may have read quotes of our host, Rick Steves, saying that it's better to visit Positano first on a daytrip, and set off home for Sorrento from Amalfi, because the bus BEGINS there, and may not stop in Positano because it is full.

If the bus is really, really full mid route the driver more than likely will not pick you up. At the beginning of one route, after the bus was full, the line waited like all good waiting people and the bus driver went to the end of the line to make it the beginning. I think he was trying out for comedy night. There were plenty of seats and line took it in strive. Do not know what would have happened if all could not get on.
