Any recommendations for a day trip to Assisi from either Florence or Siena? We'll be without a car so either bus or train, or even an organized type bus tour from either city would be possible.
I see that you also posted a question about Orvieto to Siena. A few years ago I travelled from Orvieto to Siena via Assisi. It is a little bit out of the way but a stop in Assisi is very doable on the way from Orvieto to Siena. You should be able to find the details on the Trenitalia website.
maggie,
Siena to Assisi is best by bus http://www.sena.it/
This is really easy to do and we did this trip last year from Siena. Check out the website listed above. Also it is easy to buy your ticket from a local tabacco or similar shop - your hotel will be able to let you know one close by. They will ring and make sure you can get a seat. The bus leaves from the train station in Siena and only makes 2 or so stops before arriving in Assisi. One thing to be aware of is that they will not allow hand luggage size bags on board - everything must go in the luggage compartment under the bus. So if you have anything fragile take it out before you load your luggage.
Not sure how you would do this from Florence.
