Is there a bus to assisi from either poggibonsi or siena? The train takes 4-5 hours.
Hope this helps:
Piazza San Pietro is at the lower end of Assisi, so you will be walking uphill. If you take the local bus to the Piazza Matteotti stop, your walk will be mostly downhill. Which stop also depends on your hotel location.
This company operates one daily direct bus between Siena and S. Maria degli Angeli (down the hill from Assisi): http://autolinee.baltour.it/Home/455-1-en.html.
Thank you. When I click on the links and enter the departure and arrival sites (siena and assisi) it says that the locations were not included on these lines.
When you type in departure Siena and destination Assisi, you will get a validation error message popup. Close that popup box. Then, you should see Siena filled in as departure. For destination, select Umbria for the region and S. Maria Degli Angeli as the location. Click Search. It looks like there is one bus per day at 5:30PM. There is a stop in Perugia.
Thank. It doesn't look like the train or bus is going to work. Does anyone know what is involved with getting a driver's license in Italy so I could drive a rental?
You don't need a driver's license from Italy. What you do need is an International Driver's Permit, from here. You can get it at your local AAA office, or via mail if you are not near one. Costs $15, you need 2 passport photos (they will take them there if needed). All the info and application is here - http://www.aaa.com/vacation/idpf.html
Quick and painless!
You also need to take your state driver's license, the international permit is a translation of that.
