Bus to and from the Vatican

We will be staying about halfway between the Villa Borghese and the main train station, and I would like to take a bus to the Vatican (actually take a bus twice - once to pick up audience tickets, and the next day to attend the audience) As far as I can tell, the distance is about 3-1/2 miles direct, but I suspect the walking distance would be closer to five miles, including crossing the river.
Is there a convenient bus route? And any general guidelines about riding the busses in Rome?

thanks,
Don

Thanks! And thanks for the website with walking directions! As you suggested, the distance is much shorter than I expected.

there are no main sites in Rome that are 5 miles apart. You don't say where you are staying exactly but if you start at the piazza barberini it is only 1 mile on foot to St. Peter's square. You can very easily walk it. You can also take the metro line A to the ottaviano stop which will put you close to the vatican museums entrance.

I might add that the walk along the river heading toward the Vatican is quite stunning...
