Bus Timetables

I’m going to be based in Siena this December to visit Chianti region and Val D’Orcia. Planning on relying heavily on public transportation via train or bus routes to Pienza, montepulciano and montalcino from Siena. This website (below) for the bus timetables is not making much sense to me- there are multiple options for Siena, for montepulciano, etc. and I’m not sure which one to select. Also, I heard in the winter routes are not very common? Worst case scenario I’ll rent a car for a few days but I’m hoping to avoid that. Can someone help me decipher this website, or at least direct me to a good resource to learn.

Thanks in advance!

I use Google Maps for Italy. That you see multiple stops for a town is because towns have multiple bus stops. To know which one you want it is best to just look at a map. And google maps can find bus routes and times for you.

That's a PITA schedule for sure. The header Feriale escluso Sabato means Mon.-Fri., then there's a Saturday schedule and it would seem no Sunday service. I've never seen so many pages for one bus route. To read, one follows a bus vertically along its column, so on the 112 schedule the bus 60112023 (!) leaves at 13:10 and goes through 2 pages of stops (ignore the stops with a vertical line) and changes it's route number to 112 and ends at Montepulciano at 14:45. Knowing where each stop is by the name is where Google Maps can help a lot.
Also note they have an App called Tip Tap in which you can buy and validate tickets and tell when a bus is arriving at your stop.

Think of this wonderful learning experience next time you read a post where someone says they want to live like a local. Locals, by the way, know this stuff is hard and will be pleased to help you.

As a fail safe, I’ll try to rent a car. I know it’ll be a last minute decision and me driving an automatic really limits my choices, but being that it’s an off-season, there will stop be some cars available, right? Hopefully..

One thing that stands out, the 112 bus is a commuter bus as the first bus from Siena is at 1 pm and most buses are late afternoon. To get there early, you need to take the early train (~6:30 am) to Buonconvento. Several pages down the timetable are for the 112 bus early morning from Buonconvento to Montepulciano.

10 years ago, I downloaded a document from googling Siena bus. After 60 pages of nonsense, there was a diagrammatic map of the Siena out-of-town bus network. It does not look like the bus numbers have changed. 114 bus to Montalcino, 130 bus to San Gimignano. Schedules were easier to read because they did not show every single stop.
