Bus station in Siena

We are staying one week in Siena, near the train station.Planning on doing a day trip to Florence ( and before all of you rightly say to be there in Florence longer,we have been to Florence twice in the past ).My question is,where do you catch the bus in Siena ? Also, have checked the Sita website but hard to figure out how late we can stay in Florence that day.Going on a Tuesday, want to reserve tickets to Uffizi ,so need to know a bit more before I do.Trip is in 2 weeks.

kathy,

I can't remember if the Bus also stops at the train station, but the Bus stop is at Piazza Gramsci, which is up in the main part of town. It's not often I hear of someone staying near the train station, so you'll probably have to take a Taxi or Bus up to town to connect with the Bus. Is there a reason you're staying at the bottom of the hill?

If you’ll be staying near the train station, you can just take the train to Florence.
There are plenty of trains traveling back to Siena later in the evening too.

You can check train schedules on trenitalia.com.

Enjoy your trip!

Staying near train station because we have a car and six adults- needed an apartment and this one has free parking .Will be doing day trips in car. We are told it is an easy walk to train station, then escalator to City walls .Had not thought of taking train,I guess because Rick's book said bus quicker. Thanks for the tips.I also read where the city bus stops right in front of our apartment so I think our location will work for that week.

"Okay, now looking at trains but encountered a problem by not knowing the name of the train station in Siena"

Easy - Siena.

"nor the train station to exit near Florence city center !"

Firenze Santa Maria Novella (abbreviated Firenze SMN).

As for bus vs. train, the bus is indeed faster from the center of Siena to the center of Florence. But if you're already at the Siena train station, you have to take time to get to the bus station, while the train is right there - so train wins both for time and ease of use. In Florence, the bus and train stations are next to each other.

Thinking we will take the train.Do we buy tickets ahead of time ? Or just purchase that day ? Wanting to make reservations for Uffizi ,maybe should make them for afternoon not morning ,just to make sure we get there in time !

Most of the trains traveling from Siena to Florence are Regionale trains so they seldom sell out and the tickets are very inexpensive. You can buy your train tickets a day in advance or the day of travel. I usually like to buy them the day before, so I don’t risk getting stuck in a long line. You can also buy them on your cell phone, on the Trenitalia website, or on the app (someone posted recently that you can get the Trenitalia app now)

Enjoy your trip!
